The Tech Garden was open all night while programmers worked to build the projects that were presented yesterday during preliminary pitches. Their goal was to turn them in by noon so they could present in front of a panel of judges and hopefully win one of the many prizes up for grabs this year.
Judging criteria was based on five equally weighted factors: Creativity/Novelty, Wow Factor, Execution, the Polished Demo and how Multidisciplinary the product is.
The Winning team for Best Overall Hack, taking away three Pebble Watches is Chat Global !
They wanted to break the language barrier by automatically translating comments on chat sites. The site uses Google translate in the back end and currently has English, Spanish, French, German, Japanese and Chinese implemented.
The second team is RobinBook -Winner of the Arduino starter kits
This team created an extension intended to alert the user to local library availability of books they search for on Amazon and Google Read. They were able to make the extension work with the New York Public Library system, but due to the various databases libraries use they had trouble connecting to Onondaga County Public Library. They plan to continue working on this project in the future.
The third team is Data Syracuse, winning 2 Spark Cores
Looking to solve the many issues with lack of information in Syracuse’s bus system, the team incorporated a text message interface to relay Centro data to users. For example, users can text their location and a return text will relay the nearest bus stop and a bus stop number. If the user texts back the bus stop number, the return text will alert them to the next bus scheduled to arrive at that stop. get the next bus arrival.
